Spell: Voorish Sign

Voorish Sign
Level: 1
Duration: Instant
Range: 10'/per hit point invested

The caster makes a gesture with their hand that causes all invisible things within the spell's area of effect to make a Save or become visible for 1d4 seconds. Expending hit points will extend the range or duration of the effect on a 1 to 1 basis, i.e. one hit point spent will grant either another ten feet of range or another 1d4 seconds of visibility.

Each hit point invested in this spell grants the caster a cumulative 5% chance to drive off any invisible/immaterial creature within the spell's area of effect. Most immaterial creatures gain a Save, but the caster can spend additional hit points to force a -1 penalty to their Save, at a cost of 1d4 hit points for each -1 penalty inflicted on the target. This is over and above the initial cost.

Every two hit points invested in this spell will cause 1d4 damage to a Horla.

Only beings with humanoid hands can perform this spell.

The bottom three rows were already set-up with some basic wards. He could see Hedrard's mark, Eberhard's mark, Gnosiomandus' mark and a few others already embedded in the armor. another symbol, a jagged white spiral surrounding an empty hand might be Leeja's mark. Special Gear
  • Synchronocitor In Episode 100 Bujilli took up a synchronocitor pointed out to him by Gazbonti the Jester. He used it to escape from the Heart Chamber of the Soulless Queen, going to the rescue of his friends Lemuel and Hedrard in New Chillon.
  • Yushgras' werm-vellum letter and the attached oily-metal spell-cyst/glyph-map/access-node that is directly and irrevocably keyed to Bujilli's aura. A mysterious object received as a gift in Episode 97 that Bujilli has yet to really investigate in order to discover just what it does, what it was meant to do for him.
  • The Blue Grimoire, The Red Bestiary, The Yellow Pages, a subscription to the annual supplement to the Blue Grimoire (paid for the next ten years), all of which were handed-over to Bujilli in Episode 97 as a parting gift from Gnosiomandus on his way out from Wermpsittle.
  • Idvard's Ring is a triple-banded ring of black and yellow striped metal given to Bujilli in Episode 49 and grants Bujilli Life-time access to the libraries, as well as identifies him as having 20 drones of his choice set aside for his personal use at Urmigan's drone shop, on Idvard's account.
  • Successfully completing Idvard's Contract brought in 120 silver coins, 6 pounds of pink salt, and one new spell, as well as a 1d4 choice tools salvaged from an armorer/blacksmith shop beneath Idvard's Keep in Episode 41. The spell has yet to be determined.
  • White-Hair Ring. Leeja wrapped some strands of her writhing white hair around Bujilli's finger between Episodes 33 and 34, when Unfred ambushed them both with a cloud of white powder. The ring allows Leeja to find Bujilli and has served as the basis of a magical rapport between them...and it may symbolize something more special as well...
  • Hedrard's Amulet; a small, unobtrusive trinket that contains a direct connection to Hedrard, given to Bujilli in Episode 26. It is a small violet gem set within a silver hoop criss-crossed with gold filaments and can be used to allow Hedrard to see through it, and communicate with Bujilli discretely, as he determines as the one wearing the thing. He accepted it as a sign of friendship...and ostensively to allow the hag to see Spragues' face when Bujilli dealt with him, which never really quite worked out.
  • Hedrard's Voucher (also from Episode 26 covered Bujilli's Library fees, waived his first year's lab fees, entitled him to a private locker, and granted him free access to all non-restricted areas, which has proven very useful...though he has yet to locate his private locker.
  • Four Little Brown Journals taken from his uncle's yurt (They appear to be spell-books of some kind). Each of the Four Little Brown Journals contains 2d4 random spells. Journal One we now know has 6 5 spells, one of which is Voorish Sign. The rest are to be determined by commenters picking randomly from those spells featured at our blog or in one of our Grimores. Whenever Bujilli winds up in a situation where he needs to dig-up a new spell from one of these books, we'll let the readers decide what spells are available by making suggestions in the comments. Any spell from our blog is fair game. Bujilli also burned-up a page from this journal in casting Malign and Particular Suspension of Natural Law in Episode 13.
  • Counsel. In Episode 18 Bujilli began to examine a Transveyance, an ancient and sentient machine, that he had discovered below Zormur's Ruined Palace. His efforts awoke the machine. It responded to Bujilli's inquiries by making a number of small, but significant adjustments to Bujilli's brain and body. He heals more effectively. He also learns more quickly and effectively. His bones have been inscribed and embedded with a form of tutelary AI-spirit, Bujilli's personal Counsel. This Counsel can answer questions, ascertain and analyze things, detect various things, interface with certain forms of technology and more. So far, Bujilli doesn't really know the full extent of his Counsel's powers or abilities. The Counsel is part of what the machine referred to as part of Bujilli's Human Inheritance, whatever that might be. It's still all very new to him, and he has been quite busy since coming to Wermspittle...
  • MAP Bujilli's gray-leather map is magical and records a mostly accurate representation of where he has been. He acquired this particular item from his second exploit in service to his maternal uncle who sent him in to retrieve some things from an old trapezoidal barrow mound. It was in that place where Bujilli's hands became mis-matched from exposure to some foul, ancient sorcery that still lingered in that place. That was also when Bujilli first realized that his uncle wasn't expecting to see him return...
  • The Gem of Muktra a mysterious, magical gemstone from another space and time that whispers to Bujilli of adventures on other worlds and of ways to travel between the planes, timelines, and worlds he has learned about to places far, far away such as exotic Zalchis or Jalamere and others. The Gem has taught Bujilli a number of 'Essential Protections,' in order to prepare him for his eventual journey to Zalchis and it is the Gem that has informed Bujilli of the nature and location of a Synchronocitor beneath the ruins of Zormur's Palace. (As of Episode 15, the Gem has been left behind)
The Spawnling
In Episode 6 Bujilli captured and subdued a miasmagaster spawnling. He currently keeps it in an air-tight wine skin that was left behind in Bujilli's room at the Academy. What is he going to do with this thing? We'll leave that up to you, the readers, after all--
You Decide.

We're maintaining a separate sheet for keeping track of Bujilli & Leeja's loot.

Bujilli: Episode 35

Previously...
Bujilli woke up wounded, bandaged and being dragged through backstreets and allies on a make-shift travois. There was a sphere of darkness surrounding him, presumably cast by whomever was dragging him around. Gonnes could be heard in the near distance. Then a shot nearly struck Bujilli. The travois got caught on some projection or mound of compacted garbage and tipped over. It was Unfred pulling the thing. Bujilli could see the sign over the only unlocked door in the alley, the place where Unfred was trying to take him--a Butcher Shop...
BANG!

The gonnes were coming closer. No doubt about it now. There were at least two of them. Bujilli wasn't sure if they were shooting at one another, Unfred or both. The travois fell away from Unfred's hands. They were gooey and strips of melting flesh stuck to the poles like warm string cheese.

Bujilli looked at Unfred. Really looked. The big man was sweating profusely, even more than his labors should have caused, outrageously more. The sweat was becoming milky. His skin glistened and was growing translucent. Greasy. Liquifying.

It reminded him of how Lemuel had transformed* due to his abuse of the Hard Candy.

Bang!

Unfred lurched forwards from the impact of the shot. A large section of his back began to slowly peel away from his ribs and spine. He wheezed wetly and bent down to retrieve one of the travois poles. With a vicious jerk he tore the pole loose and snapped off the end to make a crude weapon. His eyes burned with baleful malice as he came at Bujilli.

Hand on tulwar, Bujilli quickly looked around the alley. It was narrow. Strewn with garbage. The walls on either side were rough and irregular, easy to climb, if he had half a chance. He flexed his arm. The wound was healing fast. There was only a slight stiffness and that would pass. He'd had worse. Recently. He considered his spells. Just trying to inventory his options gave him a splitting headache. He could force it, cast something low, mean and messy...but it would cost him dearly and he did not like the idea of passing out or seriously injuring himself this close to a Butcher Shop, especially with a running gonne fight going on around him.

He looked at Unfred. The big man was beyond the point of no return. He was transforming into a Loathsome Mass. It was just a matter of time. And not much of it either.

Bujilli smirked. Rose from his crouch. Flexed his muscles to test things out quickly, then he broke into a run. Straight at Unfred. At the last moment he ducked, tumbled and brought himself up behind the lumbering hulk of rapidly dissolving brutishness. Unfred turned to face Bujilli. His left leg stayed stuck in-place. Unfred didn't seem to notice.

Not much point in jabbing, stabbing or hacking someone who doesn't notice when they've lost a leg. He took his hand off the tulwar. It wasn't going to be much use. Blocking or parrying the pole would be a big mistake--Unfred had too much muscle mass. Contact of any sort would be a mistake. Bujilli had no intention of getting entangled with Unfred...his memory of what had happened with Lemuel was still vividly fresh in his mind. Like a still-bleeding wound. For a moment he thought he could almost hear Lemuel crying.

The good thing was that Unfred was now between Bujilli and the shooters.

The bad thing was Bujilli was now between Unfred and the door of the Butcher Shop.

He avoided Unfred's increasingly clumsy swipes, swings and stabs with the snapped-off pole.

/Machine/ He called upon his Counsel; /What is my best way out of this alley? Which way should I go?/

In response to his direct query, the Counsel overlaid a panoramic display of the immediate area over his normal vision. There were at least three moving objects coming around the corner, blocking off the other end of the alley. He couldn't tell where the other shooter, the one up along the rooftops, had gotten to--

Unfred nearly gutted Bujilli with a wild lunge.

He back-stepped and just barely managed to avoid the splintery end of the pole.

For a moment he considered running up to one of the few doorways along either side of the alley and trying to force the lock. But this was Wermspittle. Anyone who kept a door onto an alley this close to a Butcher Shop either had incredibly strong locks, wards or other defenses...or they didn't need them. Not the best option.

Bujilli spat in disgust. Then he leaped to grab ahold of the first projection he thought might hold his weight. And he climbed. He climbed fast. The way that only a starved and desperate half-almas can climb when sufficiently motivated.

Spak!

The pole split down the middle. It missed Bujilli's leg by only a fraction of an inch. He could feel the splinters flying off of the thing as it broke.

He climbed.

Six stories up.

He found the eaves clotted with rotting filth and muck, but they held as he clambered up and over. The slates were rough, pitted and scored but stable.

Bujilli sprawled for just a moment. To catch his breath. The climb had not been particularly demanding, but his system was still fighting off some sort of infection or poison.

In mute confirmation the Counsel etched into his bones showed him the image of his bloodstream and tiny white particles that were being enveloped and expelled from his body one after another. His body was learning to resist and reject the effects of White Powder...and all the myriad distillation and derivatives of the nasty stuff. He knew now that he had been poisoned. Most of the effect was in his lungs. something he had breathed-in. Some sort of vapor or gas or dust.

Yes. He remembered talking to Leeja, then a cloud. A billowing white cloud. It had filled the room. Unfred had ambushed them with the stuff. But somehow he had either miscalculated or botched the job and dosed himself even more than anything he had managed to inflict upon them. A serious, costly mistake.

He was tired. Bujilli closed his eyes. Just for a moment.

It would be so easy to just lie there and sleep. And die.

Bujilli rolled into a prone position. Quickly he spotted some likely looking cover, a crumbling chimney, and slithered over to it quickly, quietly, carefully.

Someone screamed. It sounded like they were falling. It ended abruptly.

Bang!

Something slid messily down a steep section of the roof-top only a few yards away from Bujilli. It left a streak of  blood behind as it slipped over the edge and fell to the alley below.

/Machine,/ Bujilli began to ask Counsel for some idea of what was going on around him. Then he spotted another climber. They were coming up after him.

He wished now that he had brought along his bow after all. Again.

Instead he would have to improvise. He drew out his phurba. Usually, he tried to carry a pair of disposable daggers that could be used-up at any moment, either as impromptu traps or to jam a door or whatever. But he did not have any extra daggers. He had hoped to pick a couple up from a local merchant, but never had the chance. Another mistake.

He looked at the phurba in the soft moonlight. It was a beautiful bit of workmanship. Hand-forged. Inlaid with topaz and turquoise. It was a shame to throw it away. but it would be a bigger shame to carry it into death without using it. He had learned a harsh lesson from having been overly attached to his very first knife. It had been a crude piece of silver tableware that he had stolen from his uncle and hand-sharpened on a rock in secret. That knife had very nearly gotten him killed. But it had taught him the value of non-attachment to objects.

The would-be attacker heaved themself over the eaves. It was a gangly boy with matted hair and too-long nails. He locked eyes with Bujilli. Red depths of hunger and desperation and something else...something even more disturbing than simple madness swirled and crashed like waves in that boy's eyes.

Bujilli threw his phurba.

The boy lurched. Slid. His face a mask of puzzlement, he lost his grip and fell off of the roof.

He landed badly. But there would be no vengeful spirit. Only the lingering memory of those too-red eyes.

Bujilli sank back against the chimney. He disliked killing. But he had an even deeper aversion to being killed.

Showing compassion in this place had opened him up to attacks, but had he not done what he had done, he would not have made the friends he had made, nor been granted entrance to the Academy. Anyone could kill or be killed, but in Wermspittle very few people ever tried to do the right thing any more. It was such a radical concept that it had earned him no few enemies. but he was learning how to deal with that sort of thing as well.

Skitch.

Scrape.

He quickly surveyed the area around him. Someone was approaching. they were trying to be stealthy, but broken slates, sagging timbers and other things like that made it difficult to remain completely silent.

Bujilli considered his options. He was still not ready to cast a spell, unless absolutely necessary. He loosened the tulwar. He might not get a chance to get close enough to use the blade, but then that was probably the very thought going through the mind of his remaining would-be attacker. Bujilli smiled grimly. He knew a few tricks. He might yet get out of this situation. He'd faced gonnes and those who fought behind them before. They could be beaten. He'd done it.

"Bujilli?"

Leeja. It was Leeja.

His heart skipped a beat.

Was she friend or foe?

What was she doing here?

How--

The wriggly strands of white hair wrapped around his fingers tugged lightly. Insistently.

He took a gamble.

"I'm here." He waited. Poised to move, to attempt to run to the next outcropping, that other chimney or to leap across the alley. He thought he could make it. Maybe.

"You got the last one. We can go now."

"What happened?"

"Don't you remember?" Leeja was walking confidently across the roof-tiles directly towards him now.

"Only vaguely. Unfred...he poisoned me, us."

"Yes. He did. but neither of us are cut-out for White Powder addicts, are we Bujilli?" He recalled her golden irises, her billowing white hair, her talons. Leeja was not just some girl who had come to this place to get away from whatever she had left behind her. She was something...different.

"I guess not. Are you immune to the stuff?" Bujilli gripped the tulwar. He considered which spells he might be able to cast without too severe a strain. He remembered that Voorish Sign hurt Leeja before. He might be able to cast that with enough force to break free. Maybe. But he was out on the rooftops, gods only knew where in Wermspittle and he had no idea how to get back to the Academy.

"No. It just doesn't bother me overly much is all. I blame my mother." Her voice hissed. Anger? Disgust? Something else?

"So you are unharmed?" He examined the tiles around him. The ones to the right looked fractured, weakened. He'd prefer to avoid placing his weight on them. If possible.

"For the most part. I'm famished, tired and one of the bastards shot me in the leg, but I'll be fine. After I eat."

Are all the other would-be attackers really gone?

Should Bujilli stand his ground or flee?

Is Leeja friend or foe?
Should he cast Voorish Sign?
Should he give her a chance to prove her intentions?

Someone eliminated at least two of his would-be attackers...perhaps Leeja really is looking out for Bujilli after all?

She did follow him.
She did find him.
That is her hair writhing around his fingers.

Maybe...
Just maybe...
Leeja could be an ally.

But just in case...
That weakened spot in the roof might serve as a make-shift trap of sorts...if he can maneuver her towards it...but is that a good idea?

Truth and Consequences.
Looks like we'll be getting a bit of both next episode...

What should Bujilli do next?

You Decide!

Bujilli: Episode 29

Previously...
Leeja, the girl with white hair whom Bujilli just met in the Beast Pens has turned out to be far more than just another pretty face. In fact Leeja appears to be something other than strictly human. And now Bujilli must decide whether her recent attempt to infiltrate his mind, body and soul is something that he should see as an attack, or more of a misunderstanding. He's a stranger in this strange world, and perhaps...perhaps...Leeja might still be of some help to him. If he establishes firm boundaries and explicit expectations up front.
But all of that isn't what really concerns Bujilli. What bothers him most is that on some level, he rather enjoyed Leeja's subtle predation upon his person. Her attentions could become achingly addictive if allowed to continue...

"Your Nature?" Bujilli barked the words. His stomach rumbled. His skin crawled. All his hairs were on-end and he fought his body's automatic tendency to go into a fighting crouch.

He'd fought demons, yeren, oni and worse over the years...but this felt different somehow. Different and new. New and dangerous.

"I...apologize. I should not have done that. I realize that now..." Leeja averted her eyes. Stared at the floor. Fidgeted. She resembled a little girl caught in the act.

Bujilli smirked. He saw all the hallmarks of a consummate manipulator, an adept in emotional camouflage and misdirection. Like the hairless demon-bitch his uncle kept locked-up in a seven-metal cage no one else was supposed to know about. She'd taught Bujilli a few things before his uncle discovered their covert liaison. Her destruction had been painful to witness. Painful but instructive. He'd sworn then not to be fooled again, not by such creatures, not ever again.

"What are you?" He considered employing the Wrathful Facade spell, but held back. Willing disclosure was more valuable than fear-inspired confession. Bujilli distrusted the questionable fruits of fear or guilt; they were too closely akin to the misleading narratives received under torture. Only a fool believed anything gained in such a manner.

"My father was a great Lord among the Pallid, before he was driven out of the Garden by his ancestral enemies. My mother was born among the lowfolk who dwell in the deep places below Aman Utal, but she was out-caste, the child of an unsanctioned union. Thus I was also out-caste. Unsanctioned. Unwelcome."

Bujilli stared at the pale girl in disbelief. Shock. She had been unwanted, unwelcome among her mother's people, even as he had been. Half-breed, hybrid, not quite acceptable.

He shook his head. It was incredible. He wasn't used to having anything in common with anyone else.

"I grew up wandering the deep regions. My parents...they both died along the way to this place."

"You're an orphan?"

"There are a lot of orphans in Wermspittle. More every Spring." she shrugged.

"It appears that we have a few things in common. For that reason, I am willing to make an allowance for our initial misunderstanding. But listen to me well; never, ever try that...that...with me ever again." He glared at her. There was no need to append any 'or else' clauses to the statement. His intentions were crystal clear.

"I understand. I will respect your wishes in the matter."

"Good. I would rather discover allies than make enemies in this place."

"Do you wish for me to leave you now?" She hesitated delicately, poised on the precipice between unfounded hope and utter defeat.

"If you can behave yourself and speak openly and honestly, then I'd like for you to act as my guide, as we discussed originally."

Leeja smiled broadly. A bit more broadly than should have been possible.

"Let me get cleaned-up here," she pointed to an area past an arch on the right, "and we can go get some food and discuss where to begin your tour."

Bujilli nodded assent. She traipsed away to the showers. He watched her go. There was something alluring in her movements. Seductive. He looked away. It reminded him of Ahtrishka. His eyes burned slightly at the memory. Her kiss-mark was a scar upon his soul. One of many. But Her scar was also a gift. It had saved him from succumbing to Leeja's intimate invasion of his being. It let him discern what was happening. Made it a choice. An invitation. Not a violation. Not outright. Not as completely as it could have been. Might have been. Might--

He shook his head once again.

The subtle touch of those tendrils...

...intoxicating.

But Bujilli had experience with such things. They left a bitter after-taste. Ashes. Scars. Screams in the midst of one's dreams as they curdle into nightmares.

The temptation passed.

Slowly.

Like an insidious liquor that still burned upon his lips and tongue.

His soul.

He performed the Voorish Sign once more.

He hoped it would be enough.

It wasn't Leeja he was worried about.

It was himself.

BANG!

Blood.

Sharp, acrid smoke.

White. Billowing. Smoke.

Why was he leaning against the wall?

He slipped. There was blood dribbling down his arm. Left arm.

Bujilli watched the blood drip from his finger-tips.

His blood.

Bujilli smiled, his thick lips peeling back from his teeth. The tulwar whipped out with a snicker-snack.

He pushed off from the wall and went into a fighting crouch as he quickly scanned the area for some sign of his assailant.

Nothing.

No one.

Empty pens.

The office door was locked. Unfred had left the premises or was hiding.

There.

Movement.

More.

Three figures. One tall and lanky, with a gonne of some kind, probably a fowling piece. Pitchfork, sizzling prod-stick.

Bujilli moved back into the dissipating cloud of white smoke. He moved quickly, quietly past the empty manticore pen and slipped behind some stacked crates and supplies.

He checked his wound. It was superficial. Not more than a scratch, really. But it could be trouble enough if it went septic or was tainted. This was a filthy place. He set the tulwar against the crates and pulled out some yak-wool rags. He packed the coarse fabric into the wound so it would clot quickly. Then he re-gripped his blade and snuck around to the other side of the crates.

The three assailants were arguing.

He grinned nastily.

He considered his options. Invisibility would be a waste with the lingering smoke. But Haste. Yes. That would do the trick.

Bujilli cast Haste.

Then he climbed to the top of the crates and leaped back onto the mezzanine. He ran along the mezzanine until he came up directly across from the three attackers and without pausing ran right at them, leaping from the railing and landing right in their midst.

Slash.

Hack!

The impact was jarring, but he didn't let it slow him down. He swept the legs out from under the pitchfork wielder. Spin. Extend. Jarring stop.

The shooter's head left his shoulders.

Bujilli stood up.

The prod-wielder stared at him in terror.

His accomplice's head landed in front of him with a wet thud.

The fowling piece clattered to the floor.

Bujilli grinned.

The would-be assailant threw away his prod. Turned. Ran.

Directly into Leeja.

He tried to scream but quickly succumbed to her peculiar embrace.

She looked at Bujilli.

He nodded.

She devoured the assailant.

Bujilli tore away his gaze. He examined the second assailant. He kicked the pitchfork out of easy reach. Kneeling down he could tell that they were still breathing. Blood was seeping out from under their body.

Bujilli considered the boy sprawled on the dirty floor bleeding out his life.

What should Bujilli do now?

Let the attacker die?
Or should he try to save the attacker in order to find out who sent them and/or why they attacked?

Are there more assailants waiting in the wings?
(somebody Roll Some Dice!)

What is the connection between Leeja and these attackers?
What is going on with Unfred?

So many questions...What will Bujilli's next move be?

You Decide!

Bujilli: Little Brown Journals

Bujilli's Four Little Brown Journals
When he left his uncle's yurt, Bujilli took the four Little Brown Journals that originally belonged to his father. Each of these four booklets are hand-made with triple-stitched covers of ultra-durable Bruthem hide and deeply enchanted in such a way that they attract, capture and accumulate spells in a weirdly osmotic manner.  Each Journal is blank until someone concentrates upon a particular page. Spells then appear fully inscribed upon the pages before the very eyes of the person attempting to read the Journal. The spells that appear tend to be random, and the reader can opt to either study the spell so captured, or to cast it immediately as though it were a one-use sort of scroll or tablet. Casting the spell directly out of the Journal destroys the page involved, permanently deleting the spell once it is so cast. For example, Bujilli has already lost one page from the first journal by casting the Tsannic spell: Malign and Particular Suspension of Natural Law in Episode 13. As he found out in that particular instance, casting a spell directly from the Journal does not confer any benefits beyond giving the user a chance to cast a spell that they otherwise might not have access to, nor the appropriate resources/preparations to deal with adequately...a situation that nearly killed Bujilli. He does not intend to make the same mistake twice. If possible.

In Episode 21 Bujilli toook time to study the Little Brown Journals and learned several new spells: Zymurgic Disgestion, Umbral Maiming, Charnel Breath and Wrathful Facade.

The spells contained/captured by each of the remaining Journals are to be determined by commenters picking randomly from those spells featured at our blog or available in one of our PDF-grimoires.

Until all the spells from the Little Brown Journals are determined, Bujilli can still opt to capture and cast a spell in extremis, as in Episode 13. It is also an option for Bujilli to spend some more time studying the Journals in order to learn more spells, if and when anyone cares to have him do such a thing...

Journal One
Contains 5 spells (2d4-1)
  1. Voorish Sign
  2. Zymurgic Disgestion
  3. Umbral Maiming
  4. Charnel Breath
  5. Wrathful Facade
  6. Deleted: Malign and Particular Suspension of Natural Law [see Episode 13]

Journal Two
Contains xx spells (2d4 +12)

How many spells are in this particular Journal remains to be determined. The first reader who rolls 2d4 and enters the result in the comments to this post decides how many spells are available. Then it's open to reader suggestion by dice rolling or personal fiat to decide which spells from our blog or one of our Grimoires are included in this Journal. Thanks!

Journal Three
Contains xx spells (2d4 +10)

How many spells are in this particular Journal remains to be determined. The first reader who rolls 2d4 and enters the result in the comments to this post decides how many spells are available. Then it's open to reader suggestion by dice rolling or personal fiat to decide which spells from our blog or one of our Grimoires are included in this Journal. Thanks!

Journal Four

This Journal will be available as a pdf shortly.

Leeja has been granted life-time access to Idvard's libraries and archives at his Keep on an Adjacent World. In Episode 38 Leeja and Bujilli interrupted a clutch of little Slasher spawnlings in mid-meal when they came crashing through the roof. One of the tiny Slashers has taken an interest in Leeja, going so far as to perch upon her shoulder and guard her unconscious body, something quite out of character for such a creature. Leeja left the creature in her travel-pouch where it guarded her few possessions until recently when it laid eggs and died, leaving her with a number of slasher eggs.

Bujilli: Episode 62

Previously...
Whisked away from Wermspittle by a demon with the help of his conniving Uncle, Bujilli has been brought back home, after a fashion. A cave in the Yaddivar Highlands overlooking a heavily forested gorge, one of the caves he once was forced to go dangling for treasure by his Uncle. The Cave of the Centipedes. A place Bujilli once swore he'd never come back to for any reason whatsoever. Now, due to a treacherous sorcerous intervention, he was right back where he never wanted to be ever again. Brought here against his will, Bujilli was forced to face a sordid bit of his childhood that he had fervently tried to forget. Ahtrishka. The demoness who once marked him, claimed him as her own. But Bujilli is not a child any longer, something Ahtrishka learned to her everlasting regret. Finally free of the demoness, Bujilli finds himself confronted with his duplicitous Uncle. But before he can come to terms with his so-called guardian and former tormentor, four axe-wielding Mountain Yeren lunge into the cave intent on hacking Bujilli to bits. He only has time to consider one disturbing thought before engaging his long-time enemies: did his Uncle deliberately attract the Yeren?

Green light faded, a blurry visual echo seeping into the rough-hewn walls of the cave. His Uncle's Voorish Sign had done its intended job. Bujilli glared at his Uncle. The old bastard grinned at him, pointed to the entrance, to the Yeren. There wasn't time to deal with the rotten old sorcerer. Not yet.

Bujilli faced the incoming Yeren. It was like old times. He could sense none of the usual tell-tales of a shaman or other spell-caster among them so he used Julindi's Darts* to demolish the lead Yeren's face. That bought him time enough to draw both tulwar and hand-axe, and to choose his next target.

The lead Yeren screamed in rage and pain. Dropped it's axe. Clutched it's face as steaming blood gouted forth. The other three shoved him aside. Either he recovered, or he'd be meat later. Yeren were a hard people, extremely practical in such matters. Meat was meat.

The Cave of the Centipedes had been expanded and reinforced by Almas. It was scaled for much shorter humanoids. It wasn't the best place for trying to swing a heavy axe around. If anything, it favored Bujilli who knew the place all too well.

Slash! A wound blossomed on the shaggy forearm of one Yeren. Hack! Bujilli's hand-axe bit deep into the shoulder of another. The third Yeren growled in frustration--the others blocked it from making any sort of attack.

Bujilli yanked loose his hand-axe, spun and drove it square into the chest of the second Yeren. His tulwar slashed across the eyes of the first one. He stepped back. Ripped the axe free again. The cave echoed with the growls of the Yeren. One could barely hold its axe any more. Its partner couldn't see clearly. The one in back was getting impatient, anxious to get into the fight.

The Yeren with the ruined face roared in blind rage. It was charging. Regardless of its fellows.

The one in back cut it down with a heavy chop of its axe.

Bujilli dodged a back-handed swipe. He slid in after the axe. Struck the Yeren in the upper arm with both blades. The arm was ruined. Only a few tendons kept it from falling free. Its axe fell to the floor of the cave.

Too bad it had been the already blinded one.

The other Yeren chopped at Bujilli's legs. He barely avoided the blow. Almost lost his footing. The floor was slick with Yeren blood.

Bujilli withdrew farther back into the cave. The space got narrower as it went back, making it more awkward for his opponents.

One slipped. He lunged. Scored a wicked strike alongside the Yeren's outstretched arm. Followed up with a heavy blow to the foul-smelling thing's thigh. It dropped to its knees. It's companion leaped forward, axe raised high and howling a war-cry.

The axe struck the ceiling. Sparks flew. Bujilli gutted the Yeren.

Another axe nearly took Bujilli's head.

He rolled. His right ear was bleeding. He continued the roll then sprung upwards right at the axe-wielder, skewering them through the throat with his tulwar.

The tulwar stuck.

Bujilli let it go and moved back before a Yeren's axe nearly caught him.

Then an axe crashed into the cave wall less than an inch from his own face. He lashed out with his hand-axe. It bit deep into the attacker's shoulder. It too was pulled from his hand.

He shuffled backwards. Deeper still into the cave.

There wasn't time to get fancy. No spells. The Yeren would sense his sorcery and strike him down before he could do anything worth casting. They were well used to killing sorcerers. He knew better than to attempt to use his short bow--he'd never get it strung in time. But an arrow. That he could use. It was certainly better than nothing.

He slid out one of the barbed cold-iron arrows he had taken from Idvard's Keep. The Yeren grunted mockingly. He could feel it's hot breath as the filthy thing came at him.

Timing. It's everything. Especially in an apparently uneven fight.

Bujilli watched the axe descend. Then he jumped forward. Jammed the arrow upwards into the soft part under the Yeren's lower jaw. It sunk into the thing's flesh. He rammed it upwards. Hard.

The axe clattered to the floor.

Bujilli dodged to the side.

The Yeren stood gasping. Staring bulgy-eyed and startled.

Bujilli retrieved his hand-axe. One quick blow to its knees and the surprised Yeren fell forwards, driving the arrow out through its skull.

He didn't bother retrieving his tulwar until all four heads were lined-up just outside the entrance.

The arrow was broken. Irretrievable.

So it goes.

If he was staying, he'd cut some saplings into stakes and mount the heads. That was what the Yeren did. What they expected. Tradition. It marked a spot as being deadly to the kin and kind whose heads had been taken. It was the only ward that anyone knew for holding back the Yeren. A crude cultural taboo. It didn't always take a spell.

He wiped his weapons clean using the matted hair of the dead Yeren. They didn't wear a whole lot. Mostly some bones, vertebrae and teeth tied into their filthy hair. One had a blue-green rag, a silken scarf of some sort, bound around it's left ankle. Another wore half of an ill-fitting bronze vambrace that had been crudely re-worked to almost fit its fore-arm. He knew better than to look for anything useful on the Yeren corpses. If they'd have had anything worthwhile, they wouldn't have been prowling around in these woods so far from their usual hunting grounds.

His breath came in white puffs that mingled and mixed with the steam rising from the dead Yeren. The cave reeked of Yeren, blood, sweat, death.

No matter; he had no intention of sticking around.

He looked down upon the decapitated bodies of the Yeren. The old hate hadn't come to him. Not like it used to. Not like he was used to.

He didn't need it.

His Uncle stepped out of the shadows towards the back of the cave.

Bujilli simply stared at the old sorcerer. He considered cutting his throat, if only for old time's sake or on general principles, but decided to give him a chance to say his piece beforehand, just in case there was a good reason to not end things then and there.

His Uncle glared back at Bujilli.

They both stood there. Eyes locked. Neither budging.

Finally the Uncle looked away. Spat on the floor in disgust.

"Fine. Yes. I admit it; I drew the Yeren to us."

Bujilli stared at the old Almas. He felt cold. Clean. Empty. Ready to do anything.

"I needed to know for certain if you could stand up to them..."

"Wermscheiss!" Bujilli laughed. He'd spent too long in Wermspittle. He swore like someone from there now.

His Uncle cringed visibly. Some part of him seemed to cave in upon itself. He didn't look all that threatening any more. Not like he used to, like when he terrorized and brutalized a small boy. Those days were gone now.

"One Reason." Bujilli growled.

"What?"

"Give me one good reason not to kill you right where you stand."

His Uncle cringed visibly. Looked down at the cave floor. Heaved a heavy sigh.

"I helped you destroy Ahtrishka--"

"After consorting and conspiring with her to summon me here in the first place."

"I had no choice--"

"We're sorcerers--we always have a choice. You taught me that."

"Then for that reason alone you might spare my life."

"Why did you bring me here?"

"I need your help..."

"So you colluded with that demon-bitch Ahtrishka to bring me back? Not the best way to inspire me to be particularly helpful..."

"I wasn't worried about her. I summoned her up in the first place. I built the cage she used to be locked-up inside...until someone released her."

"I considered it a parting gift."

"Ungrateful, reckless scoundrel. You cost me a great deal in your leaving."

"Do you truly wish for a full accounting between us old man? Grateful? You would have me thank you for your beatings, your continual abuse, your forcing me to go down into dark places in search of salable trinkets without so much as a knife to defend myself with--"

"Until you stole one."

"Like I had a choice."

"You did. You made it. You took what you needed."

"I was a child."

"And you survived. You became one of the best danglers ever, until you got too big to squeeze into the deepest nooks and crannies."

"It certainly wasn't from growing fat on the scraps you begrudgingly left for me."

"You needed to be hungry so that you'd come back. It was motivation to find something worthwhile."

"Like my tulwar."

"Exactly. You still owe me my fair share for letting you keep it--"

"Hah! Take it if you dare. We both remember what happened last time you tried to claim it."

"Damned thing nearly took my head off. It's your blade now, whomever forged it or wielded it long ago, it belongs to you now. But I am still owed my due as your sponsor and legal guardian--"

"I owe you nothing."

"Not true. Who taught you spell-casting?"

"Hah--I taught myself far more than anything you ever tried to teach me--"

"And who taught you how to read? How to open your first grimoire?"

"Every spell I learned during my time with you I had to steal from behind your back."

"Of course; a sorcerer capable of trapping and binding a demon such as Ahtrishka would be so easily fooled by such a clever little boy like yourself. Fool. I allowed you to 'steal' those books, to study those spells."

"Why?" Bujilli shifted on his feet. He had always thought that he had gotten away with something. Now he doubted. He considered how things had happened. It had been far too convenient. It was distressing to feel a long cherished illusion get dashed into bits, to discover that he was not quite as clever as he had always imagined himself.

"Why? You dolt! You were never going to bring back the really valuable stuff unless you could find it, and survive long enough to return with it."

"But why not just teach me what I needed to know?"

"You hated me. You would never trust me. Besides, you had a better idea of what you needed or could use than anything I might consider appropriate or useful. Better you learned to fend for yourself than rely upon me or anyone else. Especially in terms of learning the art and science of sorcery. Believe it or not, I gave you the greatest gift of all by not making you an apprentice and binding you to me--I allowed you to retain your freedom."

"One cannot give what is not their's in the first place."

"No. But I could have demanded your servitude--"

"You treated me like a slave--"

"I made you strong. I made you a sorcerer."

"You stole my childhood. Beat me. Bullied me. Forced me into the deep, dark places in order to scrape out some bit of over-looked loot or buried trinket. You made me rob old forgotten graves and tombs so you could grow rich and fat."

"Yes. I was hard on you. Yes. I did terrible things. I am an Almas. I am a sorcerer. I never wanted you. Never asked for you. But when my sister was abandoned by your sire it was left to me to tend to her. When he tired of her and murdered her, I was left with her half-breed child."

"I never asked for you to take me in."

"No. But I did. I made many mistakes, but I am a sorcerer, not a wet-nurse or a parent. I was ill equipped to raise such a willful mongrel."

"You never did anything that wasn't to your benefit somehow, someway."

"Like I said: I am a sorcerer."

"Enough. What is done is done. I'm not a child any more. I have my own life now. Why did you call me back here?"

"Your father..."

"What about him?"

"He has returned."

"So what is that to me?"

"He intends to call you to him, even as I did, only he intends to destroy you, even as he destroyed your mother."

"And you summoned me here ahead of him? Why?"

"I want your help to destroy him. Before he destroys us both."

So...should Bujilli stick around to hear his Uncle out? Or should he start working out how to get back to Wermspittle? Or should he head out into the snowstorm, perhaps head back to the village where he grew up or perhaps go poke around in the old monastery across the gorge that the Yeren set on fire? Or is there another option you'd like to see?

You Decide!
