ANGSOC Revisionists

Brother O [confirm spelling]: There were, of course, others who preceded us, some of whom came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that.

Ambassadorial Interviewer One: And what are you like then?

Brother O: Much like yourselves, I believe. We both know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it.

Ambassadorial Interviewer Two: An excellent observation. Go on...

Brother O: Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power...

His Excellency: On behalf of His Imperial Majesty and as the Head of His forces stationed in this festering hinterland, I wish to welcome you and your people to Wermspittle. I can see that you and I have much to discuss...

Secret Transcript of ANGSOC Interview (Series Two, Room 101)
Originally transcribed by blind-typists working for the Pruztian Ambassadorial Korps at Wermspittle.
These records were confiscated, deciphered and released to the papers after the end of the First Occupation by undisclosed members of the Resistance.

Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past

They arrived on the last airship from some obscure island republic that had fallen to revolutionaries. Everyone thought they were another radical fraternal order fleeing persecution in their distant homeland because they always referred to one another as 'brother,' or 'sister.' Most people thought they were a peculiar cult, since they all tended to dress alike and had the same unflattering hair-cuts. A few considered them harmless cranks who squandered their chance to go someplace worth going.

They seemed to be interested in history. Actually, they were fairly obsessed with it. Everyone of their party seemed to possess an inordinately well-developed sense of bureaucracy and a flair for administrative busy-work. Those who lacked such qualifications were left behind. This only served to endear them to the Pruztian Ambassadorial Mission, while it was still called by that particular euphemism.

During the Occupation, the ANGSOC refugees really came into their own. Many took on Pruztian commissions and a special 'Administrative Division' composed entirely of ANGSOC personnel was formed with the mandate to 'Reform the Libraries, Book Depositories and Archives of Wermspittle,' and to 'Update these institutions in the name of efficiency and the cause of truth.'

The book burnings began almost immediately. More than half the Puritans in the city entered into service to the ANGSOC forces as provisional 'Outer Party Members.' The Puritans were used as stormtroopers until casualties escalated too far and Morlock janissaries were hired-on to replenish their numbers. The Ex-Puritans would not serve next to Morlocks, so this proved more of a tactical disaster than any kind of a solution, but eventually the Party Leadership was able to get things adjusted by the liberal application of rat-cages, mezmerism and ruthless executions for cowardice and betrayal of the Party. The Ex-Puritans quickly towed the line, though friction between them and the Morlocks continue to the present and any commander worth their salt knows to always maintain a strict separation of these two forces. To do otherwise is just asking for desertions, murders and worse trouble.

The ANGSOC Administrative Division also served as the exclusive recruiting ground for the Secret Police.

When the Occupation ended, the ANGSOC unit was abandoned by the Ambassadorial Korps in their withdrawal from the city. The ANGSOC forces took extremely heavy losses.

The hared-pressed ANGSOC survivors, branded 'war criminals' by the provisional government, went underground. Their numbers severely depleted, they negotiated a merger with another group of fanatics obsessed with cultural hygiene and censorship--the so-called Scarlet Letter Society--and formed a revised and hybridized composite group that took the name EINSOC.

EINSOC was more than just a way for the two hated and reviled groups to combine forces in order to survive, it was a rebirth of sorts for their respective members who shifted their focus away from the transgressions and over-zealous, but well-intentioned actions of their predecessors to devote themselves to educating the young, caring for the sick and rebuilding some of the worst parts of the Burned Over districts...or so they claim.

The area claimed by EINSOC is well-patrolled by Ex-Puritan mercenaries who are more than a little disgruntled that their previous service to ANGSOC is being counted against them and that their 'probationary period' has been indefinitely extended. Since they were anathematized upon their initial defection, they have nowhere else to go. So they patrol the area and take out their frustrations on anyone that gives them trouble.

Not all the old guard accepted the proposed merger with the SLS, whom many considered crude and prudish and not worthy to join their ranks. These old guard ANGSOC members withdrew from the fellows and chose to set up offices within a bombed and abandoned Print Shop that they have since rebuilt, fortified and turned into a thriving and lively beer hall where all manner of speeches, political discussions, rallies and committee meetings take place at all hours of the day or night. Each and every word is meticulously recorded, printed and stored in the rapidly growing archives. In fact, things are getting so cramped there that the group is looking into seizing acquiring a nearby, larger property and converting it into a much-needed annex to their archives. Unfortunately the location they have chosen seems to be claimed by Voormis...

War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength.

Inspiration: 1984 by George Orwell, as adulterated with the mixing-in of  Mr. Hawthorne's infamous Scarlet Letter for the heck of it. The ANGSOC logo above was based on the ubiquitous Ingsoc graphic used throughout the movie with Sir Richard Burton that had the soundtrack by Eurythmics that was actually released in 1984. You can watch the movie online at YouTube...for a small fee.

Soulless in Wermspittle

You who will read this when I am dead -- if indeed I allow this record to survive, -- you who have opened the box and have seen what lies there, if you could understand what lies hidden in that opal!

The Inmost Light, by Arthur Machen

So Many Secrets...
There are secrets too dangerous to eliminate, too potentially destructive to not hold on to in case they are needed on some dread and distant day. These are indeed dreadful days, by no means distant enough any longer...

Like all such things, it began as a calculated risk. A discrete policy that proved effective. The practice grew over time into something of an unspoken tradition. It became the way things such as these were to be handled.

Some potentially embarrassing or incriminating things cannot be ignored, nor easily destroyed. Other things are best left in obscurity, lest they reveal far more than just their mere existence. In some cases that alone would be enough to ignite scandals, inquisitions, depositions and worse. Such things can always get worse. All things made have makers, and it is sometimes best for those in power to not have their involvement in sordid undertakings or failed experiments known. Reputations are such delicate things. Often in need of repair. Setting aside the detritus of failures most foul and things best not discussed is but one step in this process. Sending such things into the care of mute monks, prisoner-librarians, scribes and archivists locked away in obscurity, out of sight, out of mind, could work wonders.

There are occasions when it is necessary and prudent to retain such unfortunate records and dubious remains, if not for posterity's sake, then for some possible use or advantage in the great game of innuendo and blackmail that goes on underneath the cloaks and the daggers of more conventional forms of espionage and subterfuge. Banned books and the unpleasant evidence and remains of illicit medical experiments, as well as the unexpurgated diaries and journals of the once intrepid experimental investigators who delved into things forbidden, unwholesome, dangerous -- these sorts of things were sent -- discretely and secretly -- to Wermspittle. Things best not discussed, let alone left lying about, have often been secreted away in the depths of various private archives, locked behind the triple-gates of nondescript book depositories, buried in the stacks of obscure libraries open only to a very peculiar elite. Where better to hide such damnable things than in the midst of the damned themselves? Stricken from the record, removed from circulation, all sorts of crates, boxes and bundles of things concealed behind such bland and banal labels as 'books,' 'records,' 'files,' and the like were shipped off to this vague and mysterious place not marked on any of the usual maps. They sent these things away in order to forget. To put some healthy distance between themselves and the unfortunate events, the questionable excesses, the blasphemous digressions best not brought to light any time soon. They sent these things to Wermspittle and left them to fester, rot and ferment in the dark. And good riddance. Or so they thought.

I am no dealer in unproved theories; what I say I have proved for myself, and at a terrible cost. There is a region of knowledge which you will never know, which wise men seeing from afar off shun like the plague, as well they may, but into that region I have gone. If you knew, if you could even dream of what may be done, of what one or two men have done in this quiet world of ours, your very soul would shudder and faint within you. What you have heard from me has been but the merest husk and outer covering of true science -- that science which means death, and that which is more awful than death, to those who gain it. No, when men say that there are strange things in the world, they little know the awe and the terror that dwell always with them and about them...

The Inmost Light, by Arthur Machen

Duplicity and Revelations...
Amid the crowds of curious heretics, unscrupulous skeptics, the condemned exiles, insane geniuses and those who feel themselves beyond the reach of the scathing rebukes of the established faiths, the reach of the so-called Great Powers, or even conventional morals and propriety for that matter, there are those who seek out the deliciously bizarre, the outre, the savory secrets of others. Some do it for personal reasons, others for personal gain. Secrets are a form of currency in this dismal, dreadful place. Secrets are valuable. Some secrets are worth their weight in fresh meat in Winter. Other secrets have a use, a utility; they grant those who know them power. So secrets are much sought after in Wermspittle. Unearthed by desperate spades, lifted out of their sarcophagi-like cases and vaults like the dead plundered from their tombs. You work with what you have at hand.

One such suppressed secret was the formulation of the Opal of the Inmost Light. The so-called 'Gem of Souls.' For many years the secret remained safely ensconced in the storage cellar of a bankrupted private repository that had sat boarded-up and abandoned for decades. The roof had been damaged during the night bombings of the Great War. Red Weeds, specifically a rather unhealthy species of Red Creeper had infiltrated the stones of the back wall and dragged them down into a jumbled pile that blocked the alley behind the place. Hundreds, if not thousands of manuscripts were lost to the ravages of wind, rain, illiterate harpies and the cooking-fires of squatters. Foragers and Scavenger-Scholars picked their way through the mess in a determined competition that was mostly hidden behind muffled knife-fights, though sometimes things escalated, as when a particularly good trove of undamaged books or unopened boxes was uncovered and spells and gonnes took the place of knives and stealth.

A box was discovered. Changed hands five times. Each time through bloodshed and violence. Until it reached the desk of a disreputable scholar, a defrocked professor of galvanic chemistry kicked out of the Academy for his retrograde theories regarding the Violet Ray. An obsessive and a drunkard, the scholar was known to piss away his funds for obscure bits of arcane bric-a-brac no one else knew what to do with. So he ended-up with the box. It sat for several years. Neglected. Ignored. Lost beneath the untidy mound of rat-gnawed scrolls, broken-spined ledgers, oddly stained journals and other esoteric impedimenta accumulated over the wayward course of the scholar's last few years.

Eventually the money ran out. As it always does. One apprentice, his favorite, sold the scholar's blind-drunk body to the Butcher Boys one Winter. The rest of the traitorous apprentices divvied-up the remains of their former master's vast repertoire of scripts, tomes and such. They each carried off as much as they could carry before word got out and looters, scavengers and foragers showed up looking for an easy score.

One apprentice, Dubrezk is the only name they've since allowed to be recorded, wound up with the box that contained the notes, diagrams and details regarding the alchemical formulation of the Opal, and the ways and means of using it to capture and hold the Inmost Light. He, or she, (it is not recorded and indeed it is suspected that they were Eloi, and thus capable of switching genders as they wished), wasted no time in attempting the replicate the process outlined in the papers they had so fortuitously liberated from obscurity. The technique worked. All too well. It was the third subject that turned the tables and extracted Dubrezk's soul. Or so the story goes.

In that work, from which even I doubted to escape with life, life itself must enter; from some human being there must be drawn that essence which men call the soul, and in its place (for in the scheme of the world there is no vacant chamber)--in its place would enter in what the lips can hardly utter, what the mind cannot conceive without a horror more awful than the horror of death...

The Inmost Light, by Arthur Machen

Something too awful, too terrible to be allowed to remain...
Acting quickly, with a confidence and surety that the young apprentice had never demonstrated previously, Dubrezk gathered-up a bare minimum of personal belongings and disappeared. Some say that they were taken by agents of the Comprachicos, or that they fell afoul of the Corruption Trade. It is uncertain, unknown. None who might know about this will speak about it. The matter of the Soulless in Wermspittle is one that is best not discussed openly, especially in public.

Dubrezk may or may not still...live...if one can call the state of being rendered soulless 'living.' What is known, or at least believed by those who have attempted to make a study of the matter, is that Dubrezk had tampered with the original process after their initial success. Emboldened by the results of the first extraction, the former apprentice set about modifying the process. The second extraction had to be destroyed. No records survived that attempt. However the third extraction did succeed, only not in the planned and expected manner. Dubrezk was subjected to the extraction process personally. And they survived. After a fashion. In any case, someone, or something, calling itself Dubrezk is credited with having founded the Soulless.

They may have begun as a small cabal of apprentices, a circle of those who'd undergone the extraction process under Dubrezk's personal oversight. That is one theory. They might have built-up their power-base as a secretive cult operating on the fringes of the Academic community. No one is likely to ever be really certain. But one thing is very clear; the Soulless have become a force unto themselves, a faction that has seized upon a dark and awful power and made themselves the masters of a terrible science that they make available to those they deem worthy...at a horrific cost.

For one night my wife consented to what I asked of her, consented with the tears running down her beautiful face, and hot shame flushing red over her neck and breast, consented to undergo this for me. I threw open the window, and we looked together at the sky and the dark earth for the last time; it was a fine star-light night, and there was a pleasant breeze blowing, and I kissed her on the lips, and her tears ran down upon my face. That night she came down to my laboratory, and there, with shutters bolted and barred down, with curtains drawn thick and close, so that the very stars might be shut out from the sight of that room, while the crucible hissed and boiled over the lamp, I did what had to be done, and led out what was no longer a woman. But on the table the opal flamed and sparkled with such light as no eyes of man have ever gazed on, and the rays of the flame that was within it flashed and glittered, and shone even to my heart. My wife had only asked one thing of me; that when there came at last what I had told her, I would kill her. I have kept that promise...

The Inmost Light, by Arthur Machen

A Shining Path into the Unnameable...
Opals. Gleaming and glittering with internal flame. There is no mistaking the Opals of the Inmost Light. They are unlike any other gem or stone known to lapidary, alchemist or sorcerer.

The elders and leaders of the Soulless collect the Opals of their subordinates. In effect they hold their follower's souls hostage, mounting the Opals in increasingly ornate jewelry, usually circlets, tiaras and elaborate crowns. The Soulless consider themselves to be Lord of the World. And they act accordingly.

Calculating and cruel, the Soulless have forsaken their humanity, sacrificed their own souls to the pursuit of personal power. Worldly power. They reject the afterlife, spurn the doctrines of transmigration and the like. Instead the Soulless have seized upon a process that others leave to blind chance, capricious gods or hungry ghosts and they have made it their own. They have subverted their own souls, uprooted and transplanted their vital essences into the synthetic Opals produced as part of their dark arts, and entered onto paths through darkness and mystery no others can apprehend, let alone ever hope to understand. The Soulless are not like anyone else. Their motivations are inscrutable, unknowable.

They are cunning, these secretive sorcerers. Heedless of bloodshed, immune to the pain they cause, unburdened by the pangs of conscience or morality. They have gazed deeply into the abyss underlying all life and allowed something foul and primordial to enter into the vacated shells of their flesh, to take up residence in the house of life itself. Their brains are remade along devilish lines. Their hearts are hardened, pitiless and inhuman. They despise humanity even as they build their own empire in the very midst of their most hated hosts.

To look into the eyes of the Soulless is to look upon something dreadful and indescribable. They harbor a nameless horror deep within. Something timeless, shapeless, ambiguous and amorphous. A black seething corruption that claims their bodies in time, leaving only the glimmering, gleaming Opals to go on, enduring beacons of wickedness eager to lead the unwary astray, to work their wills upon the lesser intelligences, fiercely unwilling to go quietly into the great good night.

His face was white with terror as he turned away, and for a moment he stood sick and trembling, and then with a start he leapt across the room and steadied himself against the door. There was an angry hiss, as of steam escaping under great pressure, and as he gazed, motionless, a volume of heavy yellow smoke was slowly issuing from the very center of the jewel, and wreathing itself in snakelike coils above it. And then a thin white flame burst forth from the smoke, and shot up into the air and vanished; and on the ground there lay a thing like a cinder, black and crumbling to the touch...

Agents of the Comprachicos (Wermspittle)

The Comprachicos, we insist, had nothing in common with the gipsies. The gipsies were a nation; the Comprachicos were a compound of all nations—the lees of a horrible vessel full of filthy waters. The Comprachicos had not, like the gipsies, an idiom of their own; their jargon was a promiscuous collection of idioms: all languages were mixed together in their language; they spoke a medley. Like the gipsies, they had come to be a people winding through the peoples; but their common tie was association, not race. At all epochs in history one finds in the vast liquid mass which constitutes humanity some of these streams of venomous men exuding poison around them. The gipsies were a tribe; the Comprachicos a freemasonry—a masonry having not a noble aim, but a hideous handicraft...
The Man Who Laughs, by Victor Hugo

Ten Agents of the Comprachicos
  1. Rudarl is a Minimus, a type of artificially-produced dwarf created by deliberately stunting the development of a young child using bindings, clamps, metal frames, knot-grass and a host of other techniques. Constantly wracked by pain, Rudarl is a product of the Comprachico family known by the sign of the Black Unicorn. They have his three children and his wife. His family is supposed to be safe, so long as he does what he is told. He knows all too well what the Comprachicos are capable of doing to his loved ones. That's why he serves them. For now.
  2. Alnuf was a Forager until he fell through a rotted roof and landed in a vat of Drab Jellies being cultivated by a mad artist. His entire left side is permanently a colorless dish-water gray. It seems harmless enough, but he's convinced his peculiar skin condition is what has turned people against him. He works for the Three-Toed Claw every now and then. They don't judge him. Nothing heavy. None of the dirty stuff. He doesn't have the stomach for that sort of thing. He just handles courier jobs, makes deliveries and pay-outs. That sort of thing. That way no one gets hurt by what he does. He really believes that.
  3. Gritta is an Eloi who works for those who know how to display the token of a laughing monkey cast in green-brass without drawing undue attention. She doesn't make much of an impression. Even her own family tends to overlook her. Except for the Cheshire Grin that a pimp cut into her face with a broken bottle. They never found his body.
  4. Datchmir has worked for the Crook-Tongues for three dozen Winters and more. As a Perdu he has always enjoyed a certain advantage over their usual agents. Until tonight. Some interloper botched a deal three months in the making. An entire shipment was lost, running loose through the Low-Streets even now. And Datchmir needed to reach a surgeon soon. There was Achromic Powder in the bullet he had lodged in his chest.
  5. Gleer the Invunche is twisted in more than just their body. He squats fat and toad-like atop his usual stool at the end of the bar in some dismal, unnamed tap room on Plover Lane, sipping Black Liquor and trying to keep the Black Swans from finding out he has been selling their secrets to a group of vigilantes. Little does Gleer realize, he's being used to lead the would-be abolitionists into a trap. It's not the first time, but the Black Liquor makes it hard to keep some things straight.
  6. Korzu ran away from the Circus, Bairini's Big Top no less. He was going to be a sailor on an airship. Like he read about in his family's stash of old magazines and other relics from their time on the road as a travelling company. Of course that all ended many years ago. As he found out to his chagrin and dismay one bitterly cold night. He probably would have starved, if the Butcher Boys hadn't gotten to him first. But Granny Trosh took him in and gave him a job. He's been a good boy. Loyal, dedicated, productive. He expects to take over for Granny when she retires. The crew has different ideas. That's why they've paid a pack of Ractur to see that Korzu disappears one of these nights. Preferably by way of a Loathsome Mass or something similar.
  7. Doktor Heronimond Wu, late of Breneva, used to work on retainer for some of the Comprachico families that operated out of the capital before the war. It was his great misfortune to have been found out, tried and placed into exile only three days before the city fell. He hates this place. He doesn't like to talk about his life in the old country, but when he gets more than a little drunk he'll show off his right hand--the one that he keeps gloved all the time--and regale an appreciative audience with his tale of how he avoided being crucified, only to be rendered a shadow of his former self, for the most part. What makes it all one big farce, once he gets going, is that he cannot afford a license to practice medicine in Wermspittle. So he has fallen back upon his old connections and sordid acquaintances in a certain disagreeable trade. He reeks of cheap gin and curdled guilt. In the Spring he gently weeps for the children as he sips his armagnac or amontillado.
  8. Lurim is studying the soft spells favored by those who hope to get somewhere within the Black Swans. It hasn't been easy. He attends night classes taught by a clique of uppity apprentices trying to earn better wages than they'd get serving as Foragers. The one spell he most wants to learn is Charm, but they never seem to cover that on the nights he can make class.
  9. Murzane has a hard time doing as he's told. He and the elders who run his family have butted heads more and more often since he returned from his three years service in the Franzikaner Unterkorps. He suspects that a large part of the friction stems from his being Half-Morlock. His father's family never approved of his mother, nor of him. But he is still family, so the Black Unicorns try to find him things to do, if only to keep him out of mischief. Little do they know that he's seriously considering the offer to join a band of Takers who have far more respect for his skills and abilities than his family ever did. It might even be worth it, just to give his grandparents a shock.
  10. Hrumido is a purveyor of damaged goods. He used to be in 'acquisitions,' but no more. He quit. He got religion, kicked the habit (who knew that even a 3% solution could be so difficult to beat?), and got out of that filthy trade his family has been doing for generations. With a small loan from his maternal grandfather an the help of a couple of cousins, he set himself up in business for himself. He has an arrangement with the family. He buys the defectives, the bungled and the botched specimens (at a substantial family discount) and re-sells them to researchers, experimental investigators and the like for whatever the market will bear. He feels good about himself these days.

A Dozen Possible Missions, Jobs and Assigned Tasks
  1. Keep tabs on someone, either a Player Character or one of their extended circle of family, friends or acquaintances.
  2. Provide a little discrete discouragement to some nosy busy-body. If they don't take the hint, escalate things.
  3. Keep possible do-gooders and unwanted witnesses out of a particular alley for (1d4) hours tonight.
  4. The contact they were supposed to meet had been drowned within Spectral Brine. They must have fought like hell before getting stuffed in that barrel like that.
  5. Track down a small group of Refugees from Istovia. They are protecting a famous torturer who used to serve the Arch Duke of Malzard. She's supposed to be something of an artist. Those who work under the sign of the Black Swan wish to discuss certain matters of potentially mutual interest with the one they call The Agonatrix.
  6. Deliver a Spectral Arquebus to representatives of a Fantomist Cabal. They are supposed to pass the agent a calling card depicting a flaming skull with the word 'Remorse' on the back. Avoid any unnecessary entanglements, especially with vengeful Barrow-Men (see Entry 20).
  7. It was supposed to be a simple abduction. No one told them that these kids were definitely Not Alright. Now these Feral Children are hunting after them.
  8. Some loud-mouthed Illigom has taken-up residence near the overgrown section of the Aerodrome. Their Companion is some sort of would-be hero who has crossed the family know by the sign of the Three-Toed-Claw one too many times. Spreading a few false leads and planting some incriminating evidence ought to get these meddlers into plenty of trouble, well away from the family's business interests.
  9. A sack of 2,000 black disks must be handed-off to a one-eyed Ourang at Midnight in the third booth on the right at Sibillent Sue's Sustainery for services rendered. Do not go upstairs to the Succulatrium no matter what. That is all they know.
  10. Follow and report back on the movements of an otherwise nondescript recent arrival.
  11. Pay the bar-tab and gambling debts for a burned-out Dowser who the Red Spade family wants to keep out of commission.
  12. Place an order for another 600 pounds of Hard Candy with one of the local Candymen. It's a rush order. Replacement for a lot shipment.

Comprachicos (Wermspittle)

The Comprachicos worked on man as the Chinese work on trees. A sort of fantastic stunted thing left their hands; it was ridiculous and wonderful. They could touch up a little being with such skill that its father could not have recognized it. Sometimes they left the spine straight and remade the face. Children destined for tumblers had their joints dislocated in a masterly manner; thus gymnasts were made.

Not only did the Comprachicos take away his face from the child; they also took away his memory. At least, they took away all they could of it; the child had no consciousness of the mutilation to which he had been subjected. Of burnings by sulphur and incisions by the iron he remembered nothing. The Comprachicos deadened the little patient by means of a stupefying powder which was thought to be magical and which suppressed all pain...
The Man Who Laughs, by Victor Hugo

Beware Strangers with Hard Candy...
Once upon a time they were vagabonds and wanderers. These days, ever since the wars, it's more of  a family business. Most of the practitioners, those with any real skill worth noting, tend to have been brought-up within the trade, a member of one of the so-called 'families,' that resemble crude gangs far more than what is commonly accepted to be a legitimate family.

Nearly all of the Comprachicos were born to it. Trained from childhood to a double-life of secret identities, passwords and subterfuge. Masks. Gloves. Hoods and capes. Spells of distraction and disrecognition. The Comprachicos are subtle in their dealings with would-be clients or suppliers. They used to deal with royalty and nobles, serving as a surrogate for exile or execution, delivering marvels, prodigies and wonders on order and at imperial decree or royal whim. Nothing, not the sea nor the weather, is quite so fickle, duplicitous and unforgiving as a Queen, King or similar potentate. Those who left themselves open to retaliation found themselves imprisoned, killed or walled-up in dismal places once their usefulness was deemed at an end, or they were thought to be more of a threat or hindrance than a source of amusement or pleasure.

The Comprachicos learned their lessons well. No one ever sees their face. They use false names. Assumed identities that collect their reputations and notoriety on their behalf. They hide behind shadows and loop-holes, a veil of bribery, blackmail and broken promises. Quiet and discrete, they know many lurid secrets. They are used to catering to the tastes and desires of the decadent and the depraved. Who are they to judge? Who indeed.

There are only a handful of such families that have been at it for generations, each one with their own unique approach and specialized techniques. Discrete dissemblers, clever and conniving opportunists who prey upon the weak, the vulnerable, who especially single-out children as their stock-in-trade. They are easily mistaken for common pimps or flesh-peddlers, even recruiters or press-gangers during the Spring Revels. But make no mistake; they are cruel slavers who abduct their victims, use mutilation and disfigurement, sorcery and surgery to transform those they capture, changing them with injections of White Powder distillates, Dim Ichor transfusions, and worse. Joints are warped, limbs are twisted, the extent of the involuntary modifications wrought upon the victims of the Comprachico families are as astonishingly diverse as they are disturbing, oftentimes horrific. And final. They bind their victims into a dark world they'll never escape. Even death may not be enough to escape the more nightmarish transformations wrought.

The Comprachico families hide their slaves in plain sight. It is as if they would dare anyone to identify one of their victims. No one ever has. Perhaps no one ever will. Some they lease to the Circus, others they trade to the brothels and bordellos. Those less suited to such work get tossed into the Arenas or sold off to mercenary companies. The truly ruined and worthless specimens they try to pass off on the Zoological Institute, the Museum of Unnatural Histories, or some other such member of the Academy. Failing that, they will off-load the remainder to the Butchers, even if they have to keep them penned-up until Winter, so as to get a decent price.

Unlike the users and addicts manufactured by the Corruption Trade, the Comprachicos get by on the silent complicity of grudging acceptance. People give up in the face of difficulty or obstacles, especially when you might get targeted personally, or your family might suffer for your sticking your nose in where it isn't appreciated. The Comprachicos have a well-earned reputation for wickedness and vindictiveness. When someone is suspected of having been taken by the Comprachicos, the local authorities stop looking. It often just isn't worth the hassle and heartache that is guaranteed to follow should they continue pursuing some line of inquiry the families don't want examined. Besides, everyone knows it would be useless, even futile to keep looking. not to mention dangerous. Maybe not in terms of a knife or a bomb. The families tend to be more cagey, more cunning than that. Bad luck. Accidents. Rumors and innuendo. Planted evidence and trumped-up charges. Litigation and other nuisances of a more civilized sort can be just as effective as any midnight assassin. Those who persist beyond the increasingly severe signals of the families' displeasure have a tendency to disappear. The Comprachicos place a premium on maintaining the status quo. They like to keep things quiet. Out of sight, out of mind.

The families have invested a lot of time and money infiltrating and insinuating themselves into all levels and strata of society. Everyone knows it would be impossible to root them out. Everyone knows that they have eyes, hands and friends everywhere. It is amazing how much 'everyone' knows about such a secretive group.

Metempsychotics (Cliques and Cabals/Wermspittle)

Discredited theories and outre beliefs fester and proliferate in the shadows of Wermspittle's sagging roofs and crumbling walls. Founded by outcasts, heretics and outlaws, Wermspittle is a seething hot-bed of obscure cults, weird religions and forbidden practices. Few ask any questions regarding anyone else's religious persuasion, lest someone inquire a bit too exactingly into their own spiritual proclivities. Most folk have more pressing issues to tend to, such as providing for their families and avoiding the growing ranks of the possessed, pestilent or plague-riddled masses of Refugees and other foreigners who stream into the city from across the harsh and unforgiving wilderness surrounding this former bastion of no one empire, no particular nation. Those particular distinctions no longer mean very much any more...
One of many such splinter-factions to develop from within the ranks of the Mesmerists, much like the Necro-Mesmerists before them, the Metempsychotics have codified a 27-page creed, a distinctive dress-code, and their own corpus of spells and rites reserved for those initiates who have proven themselves to the Inner Quadrangle.
"We remember everyone. We are everyone. Eventually..."
Excerpted from The Metempsychotic Creed

Metempsychotics seek a personal and abiding union with the souls of those who have preceded them into the gaping black abyss of death. Trained in mnemonics, the art of memory, and esoteric trance techniques originally developed by Mesmerists, Hypnogogues, and their ilk, each Novitiate who petitions for Initiation into the Inner Mysteries of this group is severely tested by way of three increasingly difficult ordeals. The first ordeal is a Mental test, the second ordeal is a Physical challenge, the third Ordeal is Spiritual in nature. Those who fail any of the Three Ordeals are banished from the cult after having their memories purged through a harsh combination of drugs and spells that is both deeply damaging and often debilitating.

All Failed Initiates suffer a -2 penalty to Wisdom and Intelligence. They can eventually recover one or the other attribute, but as they regain 1 point in that attribute, they suffer a further loss of 1 point in the other attribute. Their HD are permanently reduced to D4s, and their chances for spell failure are double the norm.
  • Those who Pass the First Ordeal gain a +1 bonus to Charisma and a +2 Bonus to all Saves versus Charms and Mind Control Magics. This benefit is not lost if the Novitiate fails the next Ordeal.
  • Those who make it through the Second Ordeal gain a +1 bonus to either Strength or Constitution (Player's choice), as well as the ability to Detect Consciousness as a free spell. This benefit also remains in effect, even if the Novitiate fails the next Ordeal.
  • Those who pass the Third Ordeal gain a +2 bonus to both Intelligence and Wisdom in addition to the bonuses granted by the previous two Ordeals. They also now progress as a Cleric, despite their initial class, and have access to the unique spells of the cult. Those who pass the Third Ordeal can no longer be affected by the methods used to deal with those who fail either of the other Ordeals. Should they turn against the cult, they will either be assassinated or abducted and imprisoned, depending upon the decree/whims of the Inner Quadrangle.
No Initiate-Cleric below 9th level may approach the Inner Quadrangle. Those deemed worthy are given a Quest to fulfill. Those that succeed are inducted into the rarefied ranks of the Inner Quadrangle and a number of special spells/powers are conferred upon them.

Or so goes the rhetoric...
No one who has failed the First Ordeal has lived more than three months after being unceremoniously dumped, naked and unarmed in some back alley.

Those who fail the Second Ordeal tend to go mad and die violently within a few weeks of being cut loose. Those who do not develop into full-blown demoniacs, maniacs or ravers tend to suffer berserker-style  rages at seemingly random intervals, until they attract the untender attentions of Hasnamusses, Predatory Projections or worse.

No one who has passed the Third Ordeal ever spoke in their own voice ever again. Those who pass this ultimate test of ideological fitness and self-discipline are rewarded by having their minds expanded, their brains re-channeled and their very souls surgically modified by deeply intrusive sorcerous techniques. They become the active core persona surrounded by a constellation of captured souls. Upon attaining this new level of spiritual development they are expected to go out into the world to capture and enslave as many spirits, souls and whomever, whatever else they see fit to tyrannize. These Initiates are granted the means to Detect, Attract, Bind and Control discarnate entities, souls, and their further progression within the cult depends entirely upon their continued accumulation of spiritual power through the ruthless and continual application of these secret spells and damnable rites. Initiates also gain full XP for those souls they bind to themselves, and only 1/4 XP for anything else.

To the Metempsychotics, there is no distinction made whatsoever between the recovery of long-dead souls or stripping the soul from a still-living person. The founders didn't feel it was necessary to codify morality into their cult's doctrines, allowing thoroughly immoral individuals to assume a great deal of power over their more altruistic, even naive fellow initiates.

There are other spells available to those below the Inner Quadrangle, but acquiring them entails taking service with a 'Tutor' and amounts to a form of indenturement. It is also an option for Initiates to attempt to learn additional spells from studying old texts, scrolls, or from each other...but the established 'Tutors' tend to frown upon such blatant disrespect for their personal accomplishments and have been known to take exception, even great offense at the hubris involved in seeking to learn spells outside of their expert tutelage.

Metempsychotics are not hampered by what they see as a false distinction between Arcane and Divine magics.

Necro-Mesmerists (Cliques and Cabals/Wermspittle)

"If the Midwives, Surgeons and other Healers and Medical Professionals of the Establishment would spend more time researching cures and less time meddling in our affairs, we'd all benefit. The problem is not us, nor our methods--it is the plagues, poxes and diseases that by rights should be extinct, but are running rampant through the population that are our true enemies..."
Hyrum Malthoy Gaillardion, Former Head Master,
Wermspittle Congress of Hypnogogues, August 11th, 925.
Excerpted from his now infamous 'Final Address' just prior to his being deposed by force
upon his formal declaration of the formation of the Necro-Mesmerists as a separate body and duly constituted autonomous movement independent of the established Venerable Assembly of Hypnogogues, Psychopomps and Atavists.

The Emblem of Orthodox Necro-Mesmerism
circa 926
Sinister Pseudoscientists resplendent in their expertly tailored black robes and psycho-electrically-grounded masks of lead and bronze, the Necro-Mesmerists consider themselves to be undisputed masters of the so-called 'Necro-Electrical Fluid.' Militant and aggressive, the Necro-Mesmerists broke with their former brethren to form their own unique and independent Movement dedicated to the inflammatory, deranged and dangerous doctrines established by their first and only True Head Master Hyrum Malthoy Gaillardion. A wizened, shriveled-up old wart of a man who remains as sharp, precise and exacting in his every pronouncement, denouncement, declaration, manifesto or demand. But then Gaillardion never simply speaks when he can instead orate, declaim or inspire the masses. His every word, whim and decree have been duly recorded both by audio-journalists and indentured transcriptionists for posterity's sake.

Persecution Complex
All Necro-Mesmerists travel fully armed at all times. Since their rather abrupt mass-expulsion and subsequent condemnation following a (trumped-up, they claim) board of inquiry into Gaillardion's alleged '...atrocious lack of regard for the well-being of his test-subjects; unprincipled predation upon the poor, indigent and uneducated; unorthodox and unfounded claims, unproven techniques and total disregard for the scientific process...' there has been a state of discord, disharmony and destructive internecine rivalry and outright violence between the Necro-Mesmerists and their former colleagues. Neither side formally acknowledges the other, except to vituperatively castigate one another in increasingly esoteric and convoluted dissertations delivered with great malice aforethought, often followed by staged demonstrations, small riots, or the burning of each other's effigies, etc.

A Process Both Violent and Violating
They have learned to strip out of the cadavers and corpses of their experimental subjects and store within their personal 'Necro-Capacitors,' special Leyden Jars of (supposedly) unbreakable glass slung in a series upon elegant bandoliers, each one linked to the others by a skillfully woven array of wires and cables. Each Initiate-Member of the Contrafraternity of Necro-Mesmerists is expected to assemble their own professional regalia, tools of practice and prescribed appurtenances both by dint of their personal ingenuity and the liberal application of their ill-gotten wealth. Not only do they strip the bodies of the dead of their dignity and their residual energies, they take everything else they can get their hands upon as well, resorting to Notaries and the Courts if they must, relying upon the brute violence of their legions of abdead thralls and servitors when necessary. These arrogant adepts of questionable science have no shame when it comes to seizing whatever they want, when they want it. They do not explore the boundaries of life and death to merely become spectators or passive observers. They delve into these deep mysteries to gain power and to use it.

Preening Professionals
If nothing else, Necro-Mesmerists are notoriously stylish. Each one competes with their peers and fellow Initiate-Members to out-do one another in the elaborateness and effectiveness of their personal array of  accouterments, arsenal of mechanisms, and repertoire of unique new techniques derived and inspired by their research, experiments and accumulation of knowledge. The pressure to discover new applications of the Necro-Electrical Fluid, or to develop fresh new spells, discover new secrets of the abdead states, establish new behavioral routines for their various thralls, or other such sanctioned and permissible results is intense. Each Autumn the Necro-Mesmerists gather together to convene an Autonomous Congress that deliberately inverts and makes a mockery of the old traditions of the Hypnogogues. Each and every Initiate-Member in good standing is expected to attend; only a very select few proxies are ever allowed, and then only by previous dispensation from Gaillardion Himself. It is at this Annual Congress that reports are filed, papers are presented, findings are debated, inquisitions are held, duels are fought, and the general pecking order is adjusted based upon the elevation or decline of each attendees' status, reputation and overall contribution to the field of Necro-Mesmeric theory and/or practice.

(Un)Questionable Methods
Their continued promotion and crass pursuit of any number of questionable, even dangerously experimental 'remedial necro-electrical fluid mechanics' that they claim are intended to cure various and sundry illnesses, ailments and diseases is either a cruel farce or a horrible swindle costing their gullible and vulnerable clients what remains of their health, occasionally their minds and sometimes their very souls. But the Contrafraternity is powerful, wealthy and their higher echelons know a great many volatile secrets. They also have a lot to answer for, but few are in any position to force them into any sort of accounting for their actions, malpractice or misdeeds. Indeed Necro-Mesmerists only willingly submit to scrutiny and review of their work by a duly constituted panel of their peers. No one else is deemed qualified nor knowledgeable enough to judge their efforts. Thus they have become something of a law unto themselves, answerable only to their own thoroughly corrupt hierarchy.

Blatant Disregard
The overwhelming majority of the Necro-Masmerists' patients do not get cured so much as they find themselves converted into mindless drones, abdead brutes, or even the Shrouded. The Necro-Mesmerists do not hide their track record. Far from it. They seem ruthlessly honest about their seemingly continual failure to actually address the maladies they say they claim to be treating. Everyone knows that these techniques are incredibly risky. But still they come. Because for some, this is their last hope to beat a wracking, insidious infection that simply should not exist and that conventional methods can do little or nothing to treat. So, in the last hours of life left to them, while they still possess some shred of dignity or resolve, some pit themselves against the pseudoscience of the Necro-Mesmerists in the hopes that maybe...just maybe...they might be that one test-subject who beats the odds and comes through it all stronger, better, even cured.
